Nov 12, 2011
In August 2009, 11 University of West Florida students, enrolled in field ecology, traveled to Costa Rica as they embarked on a 10-day journey through the most ecologically diverse tropical marine and forest areas in Central America. The students had the opportunity to explore coral reefs off the Pacific coast, investigate mangrove habitats, study an active volcano and zip line through the rain forest canopy. The field ecology course, led by UWF Professor Wayne Bennett, is an elective open to both undergraduate and graduate biology and marine biology students at UWF.

www.zaneeducation.com - This K12 curriculum online biology video will help students to study and examine the distribution of the northern coniferous forest biome. You will look at the climate and characteristics of the northern coniferous forest biome and explore the transitional subarctic taiga, the boreal forest and the mountain boreal forest. Locate the moist coniferous forest biome and describe features of climax conifer forests, Learn about the characteristics of the Sitka spruce forest, the coastal redwood forest, and the Western Cascade forest, and explain how a maritime climate affects their growth. Look at the successional stages that take place in boreal and mountain boreal forest. From the Zane Education K12 curriculum online video library for schools, teachers, parents, students, tutors and homeschool and subtitled to help improve the reading literacy level of each student.

Watch Learning about forests, forestry and wood products Video Learning about forests, forestry and wood products
Sep 30, 2011
As part of the UN International Year of Forests, staff from the FAO Forestry Department visited Core International School, Rome, to see how much the children know about forests and forestry. The children had an excellent understanding of basic science and biology and had heard of important issues such as deforestation, but they knew much less about the causes of deforestation. Talking about wood products, the children knew a lot about how wood is used and had lots of ideas about how they enjoy using wood products (musical instruments, sports, drawing, etc.). The challenge for foresters is to explain how sustainable production of wood products can benefit people while protecting the other benefits of forests that everyone enjoys. These issues will be explored at the International Conference on the "Art and Joy of Wood" in Bangalore, India, from 19-22 October 2010. Alex Mojcher, a pre-med student who is majoring in biology, says taking the "Tropical Field Biology" class over Spring Break is the best thing he's done at UMass Amherst. Everything from conducting his own tree frog research at the Tirimbina Rain Forest Center in Costa Rica to sharing night walks to learn about a dozen bat species was "just magnificent," he says. The difference between reading about tropical biology and species diversity in a textbook and being able observe exotic creatures couldn't have been more thrilling.
